Introduction

Automotive, aerospace and other industries are now increasingly focused on weight reduction efforts in order to tackle the issues of energy and environment conservation. In order to achieve the goals of significantly reducing weight and at the same time increasing structural strength of products, engineers are required to use innovative technology such as design optimization. Also, it goes without saying that these very same goals require the ever sought after simplification and time reduction of design and development processes.

In this seminar, Jochen Kinzig, consultant engineer from FE-DESIGN GmbH, developer of the non-parametric structural design optimization system "TOSCA", and VINAS's automotive industry specialist Masami Tsukamoto are going to present various examples of weight reduction and functional enhancement design, including many examples of automotive components designed by European automotive industry.Specifically, participants are presented with design of automotive components such as engine, camshaft, con-rod, suspension arm and knuckle arm developed by BMW and AUDI, as well as structural members of general industrial machinery. In addition, this seminar presents successful cases of structural optimization taking account of non-linear characteristics, which is almost impossible to perform with conventional technology even though said to be necessary for further improvement of product design.

Furthermore, we are pleased to welcome Mr. Kazumasa Kato from Magna International Japan Inc. for a presentation entitled "Optimization method of stiffness and fatigue resistance of spot-welded structures and its application examples".What is more, we present examples of structural optimization of turbomachinery and general industrial machinery in this seminar.

We hope to see you in the seminar.
